Mobility Equipment Maintenance Tips

<><>
Bruno Joey Wheelchair Lift

A little maintenance 101 on your wheelchair /scooter lift can save you time and headaches. Here are three things which are easy to check and make a big overall difference in the operation and reliability of your lift.

#1 Scooter/wheelchair lifting strap

Check for signs of tearing and or fraying. Replacement of the lifting strap is inexpensive and only takes about an hour. We stock lifting straps and most days you can come by and we can work you into our existing repair schedule.

#2  Battery

Often poor electrical connections will cause the lift motor to overwork which leads to premature motor failure. Look for rust or corrosion on battery terminals.

#3 Check your lifting device

Look for bent pins. Or if your lifting device uses a seat belt buckle, look for tearing or fraying. It is not uncommon to replace these.

A little maintenance 101 can prevent your chair or scooter from damage or you from being stuck due to lift failure.

Summer Maintenance Tips Amerivan paratransit lowered floor wheelchair van for commercial use

First, invest in a road side service such as AAA. Second, uncover your owner's manual and review how backup systems work on your mobility equipment, making sure appropriate tools for the backup system are in your car. Third, inspect your car:

  • Check the battery and electrical connections for cracks and corrosion. Use a wire brush to clean dirt away around the terminals.
  • Check tire pressure and tire tread. By law you're required to have 2/32" of tread.
  • Refer to your wheelchair van owner's manual for information about fluids:
OIL - hot weather thins oil
FLUID LEVEL - Is the fluid level for your hydraulic lift on target?
    TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
    DIFFERENTIAL POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL
    BRAKE FLUID
    WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID
ANTIFREEZE - Antifreeze prevents your car from overheating in the summer
  • Replace worn out windshield wiper blades
  • Test vehicle lights, including the headlight high beams
  • Lubricate your lift or ramp - spray everything that moves with lithium grease
  • Check pendant cords for breaks, pinched spots, or cuts. Be sure pendant switches are not sticking or broken.
